5th to 21st September

Join us for two weeks in the Loire Valley, known as the Valley of the Kings and The Garden of France. Explore the delights of this world heritage region with its numerous chateaux, vineyards, walking and cycling routes and much more . Spend a week at each of two approved sites, the first close to the chateaux of Blois, Chambord, and Cheverny and within easy driving distance of Amboise on the Loire and romantic Chenonceaux built across a bridge over the Cher. The second week will be at L’Isle Verte, on the banks of the Loire near Saumur, within easy reach of the Abbey of Fontevraud, where the Angevin/Plantagenet kings are buried, the Chateau of Azay le Rideau, and the Chateau of Villandry with its uniquely ornate vegetable garden. The option of a coach visit to Villandry with lunch at the chateau restaurant is under consideration. While at L’Isle Verte we expect to arrange a talk and wine tasting, if possible on site, and, on a separate occasion, take a river boat trip on a traditional gabare. A little further to the west, the chateau at Angers houses the six Apocalypse Tapestries, six metres high and 140 m long. The Loire Valley also provides a vast expanse of unspoilt nature and a sanctuary for wild life to be enjoyed at leisure.
As an option for those crossing the channel to Cherbourg or Caen the first two nights en route can be spent on the coast near Bayeux.
Details of site fees should be available by the end of November; at this stage we are budgeting for £500. We are in discussion with Alan Rogers Camping* about providing a package which would include camp sites, ferry crossings, and the optional trips referred to above. Alternatively participants may wish to make their own travel arrangements. Participants are expected to arrange their own roadside assistance and medical cover. Further enquiries to RM on 07710 348 474.
